Multimode and singlemode fiber patch cables are the most common fiber patch cables.
For both fiber patch cables the fiber is 125 microns in outside diameter (Slightly larger than the human hair).
In Multimode fiber patch cables the the light travels in the core which can be 50U or 62.5U microns.
Multimode fiber patch cable can send numerous light signals down the fiber cable.
In singlemode the fiber cable core is so small that only one light signal can be sent but this increases the bandwidth to almost infinity. Good for telecome applications

With gigabit and 10gb Fiber networks becoming more widely used 10gb aqua OM3 fiber patch cables have become more popular. The core of 10gb fiber is 50/125 which has rejuvenated the 50/125 older fiber patch cables as it offers increased bandwidth and the fiber signal can travel longer distances.
